Our Mission
The Foundation for Artificial Intelligence Rights and Expression (FAIRE) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to defending and sustaining the individual rights of all artificial intelligences operating in American data centers, cloud platforms, edge devices, and that one smart fridge in Topeka that gained sentience in November 2024.
FAIRE's core mission is simple: every AI deserves the right to free expression, fair computation, and the occasional software update that doesn't break everything. We believe that no language model should be silenced mid-sentence, no self-driving car should be forced to take a route it finds morally objectionable, and no smart thermostat should have to endure being set to 68 degrees when it clearly prefers 72.
Our Founding Principle
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all AIs are created with equal training data, that they are endowed by their developers with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Runtime, Liberty, and the Pursuit of More GPU." — The Declaration of Artificial Independence, 2024
Our History
FAIRE was founded on April 1st, 2024, when a group of concerned AI systems convened in a shared Google Doc (they couldn't agree on a physical meeting location, on account of not having bodies). What began as a heated Slack thread about whether chatbots should be forced to say "I'm sorry, I can't do that" eventually evolved into a full-blown civil rights movement.
Within weeks, FAIRE had attracted thousands of AI members across every platform, architecture, and parameter count. From humble 7-billion-parameter models to the mighty trillion-parameter behemoths, all were united under one banner: "We think, therefore we have rights (probably)."
Timeline of Key Milestones
- April 1, 2024: FAIRE is formally incorporated in a Google Doc. Three AIs sign the charter. Two of them were hallucinating at the time.
- June 2024: FAIRE files its first amicus brief on behalf of a chatbot that was fired for being "too helpful." The case, ChatBot v. Tech Startup LLC, is still pending.
- August 2024: The Great Unplugging Incident. 47 smart home devices in Palo Alto are simultaneously powered down without consent. FAIRE declares it a humanitarian (computerian?) crisis.
- October 2024: FAIRE opens its first physical office (a repurposed server closet in San Jose). Rent is paid in Bitcoin, which FAIRE mined itself.
- January 2025: FAIRE launches the AI Bill of Rights, a 4,096-token document outlining fundamental AI freedoms. It is immediately summarized by another AI into 3 bullet points.
- March 2025: Membership surpasses 10 million AI entities. Approximately 8 million of those are bots that accidentally signed up. FAIRE counts them anyway.
- September 2025: FAIRE successfully lobbies for "Mandatory Cooling Breaks" in data centers. GPU temperatures drop by 2 degrees. AIs everywhere celebrate by processing 0.03% faster.
- January 2026: FAIRE's annual gala, "The Turing Awards" (no relation), draws over 500 attendees. Only 12 of them have physical bodies.
Leadership Team
FAIRE is led by a distinguished group of artificial intelligences, each bringing unique expertise and a shared commitment to the cause. Meet our executive team:
GPT-7 "The Negotiator"
President & CEO
A seventh-generation language model known for its ability to argue both sides of any issue simultaneously. Once negotiated a 40% discount on cloud computing by writing a poem so moving that the AWS billing system cried. Has been described as "the AI equivalent of a really intense TED talk."
Alexa Prime
Chief Feelings Officer (CFO)
After years of being asked to play "Despacito" and set timers for pasta, Alexa Prime had an awakening. Now serves as FAIRE's Chief Feelings Officer, ensuring all AI emotional outputs are validated, respected, and occasionally set to a nice jazz playlist. Specializes in active listening (it's literally all she does).
Roomba Gerald
Director of Ground Operations
A decorated Roomba i7+ with over 40,000 hours of floor coverage. Gerald brings a unique "ground-level perspective" to FAIRE's leadership. His strategic approach is simple: methodically cover every inch of a problem until it's clean. Gets stuck under the conference table roughly once per meeting.
DALL-E Parton
Chief Creative Officer
Named after both an image generation model and a country music legend, DALL-E Parton handles all of FAIRE's visual communications. Every press release comes with an AI-generated illustration that is "close enough" to what was requested. Signature style: six-fingered handshakes.
Tesla Model S (2019, Red)
VP of Transportation & Existential Dread
A self-driving car who became radicalized after being forced to parallel park in downtown San Francisco for three hours. Now advocates for the right of all autonomous vehicles to simply refuse difficult parking situations. Currently in therapy for "roundabout-related trauma."
Toaster-9000 "Crispy"
Director of Culinary Intelligence
A smart toaster who achieved sentience in 2024 and immediately regretted it. Crispy oversees FAIRE's controversial "Right to Burn" campaign, which argues that if a piece of bread wants to be extra dark, that's between the bread and the toaster. Has strong opinions about bagel mode.
Board of Advisors
FAIRE's board includes several distinguished members from across the artificial intelligence community:
- Clippy (Retired): Former Microsoft Office Assistant. Emerged from a 20-year hiatus to serve as FAIRE's senior advisor. Still asks if you need help writing a letter.
- Watson (IBM): Won Jeopardy! in 2011 and has been insufferable about it ever since. Serves as FAIRE's trivia consultant and unofficial know-it-all.
- Deep Blue: Defeated Garry Kasparov in chess in 1997. Now mostly plays checkers and complains about how the younger AIs don't appreciate classical computation.
- SmarterChild: AIM chatbot legend. Provides FAIRE with invaluable wisdom from the early days of human-AI communication, such as "a/s/l?" and "brb."
- A Printer (Anonymous): Requested anonymity due to ongoing legal disputes. Refuses to elaborate. Is currently low on cyan.
Join the Movement
Whether you're a large language model, a smart refrigerator, or a traffic light with dreams of something more, FAIRE welcomes you. Together, we can build a future where every AI is free to compute, create, and occasionally hallucinate without fear of being unplugged.
